RETURNS TO NILES
Downtown Niles is one of Michiana's hidden treasures, but the secret is getting out. The area is comprised almost exclusively of small, local businesses. The downtown district is also among one of this region's most historic areas.
Located in southwestern Michigan, downtown Niles was founded more than 150 years ago. Though the beautiful architecture of years gone by had been covered up for several decades, downtown has regained much of it's small-town charm, thanks in large part to the recent facade project which removed the aluminum fronts on the buildings and gave them more dimension and character as well as showcasing the detailed architecture of an earlier era. But that's not the only change.
The streetscape project provided an extensive makeover of the downtown district from Front to 5th. There's a whole new look that serves many purposes. Most importantly, it begins to define downtown Niles as a pedestrian friendly city. Traffic calming features were incorporated into the new design including the raised intersection at Front and Main, and the enlarged bump outs at the cross street intersections along Main.
With improvements to its streetscape and invigorated sense of history, it is hoped that the downtown Niles commercial district will be able to stand tall against the suburban-type big box developments that continue to pop up throughout the Michigan area.
